Note that many of the kids ended up doing 7.5km when it became clear they missed the 5 km turn around. Race has not been scored for any kind of points due to conditions and course confusion.

It was one of those days where it didn't matter what you were doing as long as you were outside. It was sunny and warm and I could imagine that the J2 championships at Holderness had some how arranged this great Weather.

As for the race, as Hank Lange described it, conditions were "variable". The tracks had been set the night before and ranged from blue ice, to non existent, and were filled with windblown powder in the fields. Klister iced terribly, but almost all the up hills were icy. Nothing worked everywhere (anywhere?). To add to the mix, the down hills had some sporadic powder so klister would grab every so often adding to the "thrill". The kids were to do 5km, cutting off the second half of the single 10k loop, but someone forgot to mark the cut off and they did 10 as well. But no one really cared.

Once the race got under way, it was clear that for many parts of the course the first skier would be breaking trail. The race would scramble over the ice and slow to a crawl in the powder. I choose to lead after about 1/2 k but realized I was pulling a small group along right behind so I did not kill myself. At 5k Mike Donahue went by me and I was more than happy to let him lead. By this time we had opened a gap on everyone else. I thought we were in trouble when we got to the fields at the top of the course as the tracks were completely covered with powder and we slowed to a crawl, but lucky for us the folks behind iced badly when they hit this section. I played it like a wimp and waited until we had about 100 meters to go and double polled around Mike but when your old like me you have to rely more on tactics. It was a return to the past when every race was an adventure.
