On a less than spectacular day (the worst weather in 12 years for this race), 21 hardy souls turned up for the CSU Fall Classic Rollerski Race. It was wet and cold, with a nice breeze from the north and wet roads with lots of newly fallen leaves, so the race was pretty slow compared to usual. A good crowd from MIT and Harvard came up, making this a bigger race than in the last couple years. The race started in a slight drizzle and the weather steadily deteriorated throughout, with the awards given out in a steady, cold rain.
Most skiiers opted for classic technique, given the wet pavement and wet leaves. In the classic race, Matt Bellizzi croaked everyone right from the start, while Jamie Doucett, Bob Haydock and Rob Bradlee played some cat and mouse on the first lap until Jamie's clearly faster wax job prevailed on the downhills on lap 2. On the women's side we had the largest classic field ever, I think, with Anna McLoon easily prevailing over the rest of the group. In the skate race Justin DuMond, formerly of UVM, dueled the entire distance with Derek Southwell of MIT, prevailing at the finish line by only a boot length.
Thanks to all who came to race and thanks especially to my wife, Lisa, for coming out to time the race. Thanks also to Rob Bradlee (Toko-Yoko) for providing several prizes.
