The VOLVO New England Masters Cross Country Ski Championships concluded
today with the men and women's 13km freestyle event. By the end of the
three lap race the skies were clear, temperatures were in the 50s, and
everyone was basking in races well-run and a beautiful day at the
Grafton Ponds Nordic Center.
The Maine Nordic Ski Club's Sue Foster (Carrabassett Valley, ME) and
Dorcas Wonsavage (Farmington, ME) took one-two ahead of Putney Ski
Club's Trina Hosmer (Pelham, MA). In the men's race, Rob Bradlee of the
Cambridge Sports Union (Reading, MA) won his second race of the weekend,
followed close behind by Richard Powell of Hanover, NH, and third place
went to Karl Johnson (Carrabassett Valley, ME), also of the Maine Nordic
Ski Club. Former U.S.Ski Team members and Olympians, Bob Gray (Newbury,
VT) finished 17th overall, first in his age group, and Charles Kellogg
(Manchester, MA) finished 25th, second in his age group.
Besides the medals, the best prizes were the given out by random draw to
all participants. Local sponsor donatations by Bagel Works, Grafton
Village Cheese Co., The Old Tavern, Green Mountain Gringo Salsa, and
Rossignol and Infiniti poles kept everyone around for the awards.
The masters will meet again for the season finale, the VOLVO/NENSA
Eastern Cup Championships at Sugarloaf Outdoor Center, Carrabassett
Valley, ME, March 24-26th.
