Grafton Ponds Nordic Ski Center hosted the Volvo New England Masters
Cross-Country Ski Championships this weekend. And although the weather
was less than cheery, there was plenty of snow, and Master racers and
their families traveled north from Connecticut and south from Maine to
take part in a wonderful weekend of racing in historic Grafton Village,
Vermont. Saturday's racing began with a 10km classic race for both the
men and women.
Local sponsors kept the racers fueled: Bagel Works, The Old Tavern at
Grafton, Putney Pasta, the Grafton Village Cheese Company, Green
Mountain Gringo Salsa and Mad River Soda. And when it was time to come
in out of the fog, the Grafton Ponds Touring Center's blazing fireplace
and rocking chair warmed spectators and racers in time for the afternoon
relays.. The mixed (men and women) freestyle relay included unofficial
teams composed of the sons and daughters, making the whole day a family
event.
The event drew four former Olympians -- Leslie Krichko of Ridgefield,
CT, Dorcas Wonsavage of Farmington, ME, Bob Gray, Newbury, VT and
Charlie Kellogg of Manchester, MA. Krichko took the overall win in the
women's race, while the men's race was dominated by Cambridge Sports
Union's Rob Bradlee of Reading, MA and Joe Bouscaren of Cambridge,
closely followed by the Putney (VT)Ski Club's Scott Wade, Joe Holland
and Peter Harris. The fight for the overall club winner continues
tomorrow with the final race of the Volvo New England Masters
Championships, the 15km freestyle race.
