Volvo Eastern High School Championships

The Volvo Eastern High School Cross Country Ski Championship finished day one with Maine in the lead by only 414 points, with 7533 points to Vermont's 7119 points. Third place is Massachusetts (5824 points) and New Hampshire (4064) is in fourth. Sunday's 6km freestyle race will decide the overall winner of the best of New England's high school skiers. Each State fields a team of 20 girls and 20 boys. The Vermont boys had strong results in the classic race. Chris Mallory, of Colchester HS won, and three more Vermonters placed in the top ten: Josh Dalley (7th) Burke Mountain Academy, Eben Sargent 8th) North Country Union HS, and Dun Cochrane (9th) Rutland HS. Massachusetts also had a strong performance from second place Peter Leonard of Wayland HS, third place Jake Whitcomb of Wahonak HS and Mike Payne, Gateway HS in tenth. Maine's men were lead by Steve Hunter of Maranacook HS (4th), and a 12-14th from Colin Witherill, Greely HS, Todd Townshend, Carrabassett Valley Academy and Reid Doiron, Maranacook HS. New Hampshire's top man was Zach Treamet for the White Mountain School in 5th.

In the girls' race the massachusetts girls placed four in the top ten, including first place finisher Carina Hamel, Hampshire HS, Magoli Sutton, Concord/Carlisle HS (5th), Kate Crawford, Mohawk Trail HS) (9th) and Laura Shannon, Mt. Greylock (10th). The New Hampshire girls picked up points with Alison Crocker's second place finish (St. Paul School), Kate Newick of Derryfield HS (4th), and Kelsey Allen of Profile HS (7th). Anna Sprague, of Caribou HS, was Maine's lone top ten finisher in 3rd. And Vermont's Abbie Harris of North Country Union HS and Margaret Maher of Rutland HS placed sixth and eighth. The afternoon 4 x 2.5km classic relay truly showed the depth of each Team. Maine's team of Eileen Carey (Leavitt HS), Justin Plog (Mt. Abram), Anna Sprague and Colin Witherill (Greely HS)won by 12 seconds over Massachussetts' Carina Hamel, Jake Whitcomb , Laura Shannon, and David Smutok (Wayland HS). Vermont's Abbie Harris, Dun Cochrane, Margaret Maher and Chris Mallory took third place.
