The Volvo / NENSA Eastern Cup Cross-Country Ski Championships drew a large field to the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center, in Carrabassett Valley, Maine. The two-day season finale began Saturday with a 10km freestyle race. Starting in waves of seven racers every minute, the athletes were able to race one-on-one around the hilly course.

In the mens' race Dave Stewart of Vermont won with a time of 27:32.2,just 3/10ths of a second ahead of Pat Cote from Gould Academy. Brayton Osgood, racing for Dartmouth College, was third in 28:13.

The women's race was won easily by Amy Caldwell, coach at Stratton Mountain School, in 32:09. Tracy Theyerl, coach at Colby College, and Leslie Krichko of Ridgefield, CT and skiing for Putney Ski Club, dueled to the finish, with Theyerl second in 33:22 and Krichko in 33:26.

The afternoon's event was a 4x2.5km freestyle relay. The Vermont teams faired the best. Vermont #1 of Zach Caldwell, Chris Osgood, Brayton Osgood and Dave Stewart won by a second (21:22.2) over the Team Swix/Maine sandwich, of James Upham, Patrick Cote, Seth Beal and Stein Guldbrandsen. Third place went to the Green Mountain team, Eben Sargent, Josh Dalley, Mike Johnson, and Chris Mallory (22:35). The first women's team, the Vermont Ladies - Leslie Krichko, Trina Hosmer, Mary Heller-Osgood and Amy Caldwell - finished in 25:44 with time to spare over Beastie Babes, Hannah Taylor, Emily Jacobs and Heather Beal, a Maine/Middlebury group with a time of 26:58. Third place went to the WOW Maine team of Tracy Theyerl, Annette Brickley, Sue Foster and Dorcas Wonsavage.

Sunday's event, the 10km classic race, will feature the pursuit start, with the racers starting behind the winner in order of their Saturday time behind the winner. The Awards Ceremony will feature naming of the Eastern Cup Club Champion, the Club with the best overall season's performances from its members.
